Located in Bordeaux, the Cité du Vin is a unique place in the world, which offers to see wine differently, across the world, ages, cultures and civilizations. Come closer, we offer you a unique visit.
Say, tell me the story of the Cité du Vin
It opens its doors on June 1, 2016. With a bold architecture, the building does not resemble any known shape. And for good reason ! Above all, it aims to be “the evocation of the soul of wine, between the river and the city” as its designers claim. A tailor-made look, cut for the Bordeaux vineyards. The architects of the Parisian agency XTU, Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières, imagined a place imbued with identity symbols: gnarled vines, wine swirling in the glass, the eddies of the nearby Garonne. Each detail of the architecture evokes "a seamless, immaterial and sensual roundness", present everywhere, in the interior volumes, spaces and materials.
Its facade, made up of glass and aluminum panels, is adorned with golden reflections evoking the blond stones of Bordeaux facades. Changing according to the rays of the sun and the time of day, the building responds to the color of the river. What poetry...
Below, the visitor enters a dark world, comparable to a cellar, closer to the roots of the vine. The reflection of the mirrors encourages you to climb towards the light. Up there, the belvedere allows you to discover the city in a panoramic version: to be enjoyed during the day and in the evening, of course! We cross the building like a river, the visitors are travellers, whose flow wraps around the central staircase, perpetuating this impression of movement.
The permanent exhibition can be enjoyed under a wooded vault, it is a disarmingly beautiful place, like a sky that changes with the seasons. The wooden structure also evokes the frame, the ships, the wine that travels...
Moreover, the visitor also travels through this permanent exhibition. It crosses no less than 6 great universes and 19 thematic spaces to discover wine in all its facets (history, geography, arts, sciences, aromas, etc.)
The great strength of this architecture is to put visitors in the best conditions to accomplish this journey.
immersive and initiatory.
This place, which pays homage to the civilizations of wine, is also part of a sustainable development approach, in the same way as the Bassins à flot eco-district. 70% of La Cité du Vin's energy needs are thus covered by green and local energies.
La Cité du Vin celebrates a global wine culture, with Bordeaux serving as ambassadors to terroirs around the world. The permanent exhibition offers an immersion in the secrets of wine, and is enriched by a year-round program: temporary exhibitions, concerts, meetings…. On the 8th floor, the belvedere offers a breathtaking view of Bordeaux , its access is included in the visit as well as a glass of wine (or grape juice) from a selection of around fifteen wines from France and around the world. What a beautiful way to finish!

To see, to do, near the Cité du Vin
Lormont
In the XNUMXth century, Lormont was the most important of the Bordeaux suburbs, an obligatory passage for travelers arriving from the North towards Bordeaux and the shipwrights' district. The city was popular with Bordeaux residents, fans of Sunday taverns. From the heights of “old Lormont”, the view is unparalleled to admire the Cité du Vin, discover the old wash houses and reach the Hermitage park, which houses the remains of a troglodyte chapel, dedicated to Sainte -Catherine, patroness of sailors and fishermen.
