Departing from the beautiful square of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Bazas cathedral, a former stage of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, this loop leads you through slightly hilly terrain towards
Roquetaillade castle. The greenway occupies an old railway line and winds through a landscape of pine trees and vineyards. Around you, the old tobacco dryers, the picturesque church of Nizan, the Château Caillivet and its wine estate and a circuit which offers you the most beautiful views of the Château de Roquetaillade.

Departure from Bazas

Departure is from Place de la Cathédrale in Bazas in front of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral.

Mercadilh Street

When you have your back to the cathedral, go to the left of the market square. Go past the town hall and take the second left, rue du mercadilh. Continue straight and turn right at the end of the street onto the Cours du Maréchal Foch.

Join the Mios-Bazas cycle path

At the roundabout turn left, and turn left again at the second roundabout. You are in the direction of the Léo Drouyn primary school. After passing the multi-purpose hall on your left, enter the school car park and take the road on your right which goes towards the school. At the end, you will find access to the cycle path that goes up the hill.

Direction Nizan

Head right once on the cycle path towards the village of Nizan. Follow the cycle route throughout, you pass through the industrial zone to leave the town of Bazas. Stay on the track which is to the right of the sidewalk.

Nice

The Mios-Bazas track will take you to the village of Nizan station. Take the departmental for a few meters and cross to take the first road on the left after the cycle path.

Roquetaillade Castle

Follow this small road which leads you to the village of Nizan. Go past the church and turn left. Continue straight, pay attention to the beautiful views from below on the Château de Roquetaillade. The Château de Roquetaillade, in the heart of Sauternes, has been occupied since prehistoric times. It is one of the 10 most beautiful fortified castles in France. This Clementine castle from the Middle Ages, recognizable by its powerful keep surrounded by six crenellated towers, was completely renovated by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc on the model of a “medieval dream”. Inside, the animal and plant representations in bright colors prelude to Art Nouveau have been the decorum of many films such as Fantômas or Le pacte des Loups.

Chateau Caillivet

For the Caillivet castle at the end of the road, turn right at the intersection on the departmental 125.

Mazere

Pass in front of the church of the small village of Mazères while keeping to the left to leave the departmental road and take the road to a place called Cazebonne.

Step 9

Continue straight, at the end of the road at the intersection, take the direction of Caillivet on the left.

to the Mayne

Retrace your steps by taking the road to the right and turning right towards the Mayne. Continue to the village of Mazère, pass the church and once back on the D125 continue straight.

Roquetaillade Castle

Stop in front of the gate of the Château de Roquetaillade.

to Tiberge

Get back on the road, continue and turn left towards Tiberge. Continue straight, cross the departmental road until you cross the cycle path.

Back to Bazas

Return to Bazas following the cycle path

When you cross the D3 route de Langon, turn right to return to the center of Bazas

Step 15

Follow the road by taking the Cours du General De Gaulle

Place de la cathédrale

Turn left into Cours du Maréchal Foch then right into rue Pallas to return to Place de la Cathédrale
