Basilica Notre-Dame-de-la-fin-des-Terres

Tradition traces the origin of the basilica back to the legend of Sainte-Véronique. In the XNUMXst century of our era, after the death of the Virgin, Sainte-Véronique, Saint-Amadour and Saint-Martial from Palestine landed at Soulac-sur-Mer. Sainte-Véronique erected a modest oratory there in memory of the Virgin, after having evangelized the Médoc and the Bazadais. It was probably in the XNUMXth century, when pilgrims from English lands landed there, that this Benedictine abbey, listed as a Historic Monument, was built. The construction of the Romanesque church was not completed until the beginning of the XNUMXth century. In the XNUMXth century, dune erosion caused almost total silting up of the church, which was only cleared in the middle of the XNUMXth century. This monument is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
