Fort Médoc, like the citadel of Blaye and Fort Pâté, is one of three defensive elements designed by Vauban to lock the estuary. This is the Verrou Vauban, listed as one of the fortifications of Vauban on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Bastions, curtain walls, a few cannons, the royal guardhouse as well as the bakery and the chapel allow visitors to imagine garrison life.
Never attacked, Fort Médoc proudly displays its royal emblems to the glory of Louis XIV on its door
richly carved entrance.

The start

From Moulis-en-Médoc station, turn left when you arrive at the quay. Continue on the rue de la gare to Château Maucaillou A, enough to plunge us directly into the Médoc atmosphere! Take the road to Lamarque on the right and take the first on the left, chemin de Cartillon, walk along the Château Cartillon, turning right to the end of the road in Coulon. Continue straight on, crossing the road to Pauillac to enter the village of Lamarque via the rue Principale.

Step 2

Following the rue Principale, do not miss on your left to admire the entrance to the Château de Lamarque B then turn right, rue des Ecoles. Continue on Chemin du Moulin Rose , pass the mill to reach Château Malescasse .

Retrace your steps on the chemin du moulin rose then take the first road on your right, turn left on the chemin des Calinottes. At the end, turn right and follow the chemin du Pin Franc to the Saint-Seurin church. Take the time to admire its dome as you walk along the church square. and the Médoc, the dome of the bell tower of the Saint-Seurin de Lamarque church is the pride of the inhabitants of the village. Inside, you can admire all the richness of the assembly of its frame and its rounded part, the roof itself. Step 4

Retrace your steps on the port road to take the cycle route on your right. Follow the path on the left to reach the jalle du Cartillon. Step ashore to cross the lock and follow the small path for a few meters.

Fort Medoc

At the end of the path, turn right at the second path, Le Mayne Nord to reach Fort Médoc. Fort Médoc is part of the fortified system designed by Vauban in the Gironde estuary, it completes the ensemble made up of the citadel of Blaye and Fort Paté: the Verrou Vauban, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the orders of Louis XIV, the building was built to protect the city of Bordeaux from enemy maritime attacks. Work began in 1690 and was quickly carried out since in 1691, even if all the buildings were not finished, a garrison was already set up. The fort offers the classic aspect of fortifications "à la Vauban", with its grassy ramparts, its wide open spaces in front of the structure and its ditches.

From the fort, take the path on your right and follow it to the end. At the intersection, turn left and left again at the next intersection. Follow the small road until you reach the rue du Stade. You will arrive in the village of Cussac Fort Médoc.

Take the main road, Avenue du Haut Médoc and turn left on rue Jeanne d'Arc. Then take the second left to set off on Chemin des Graves. Turn at the second road on the left and follow the small road, then you will turn left. Step 8

After the wine estate, turn right rue de Costes, cross the D2 and stay on your right. At the end of Chemin de la Rue, turn left and then stay on your right to follow Chemin de Nauton.

Step 9

At the end of the path, turn left and follow until you cross the D2e7 road. Take the departmental on your right and turn at the first on your left. Follow Courte-Botte turning right, return right to go to Château Beaumont.

Step 10

Go past the castle and follow the path to the road. Continue straight and turn right onto rue du Moulin à Vent. Turn right and left along the castle to return to the station.

Checkin

At the end of the path, take the secondary road to the right then to the left at Château Maucaillou. Continue to the station.
