All about… the Gironde Estuary

Culture and heritage

At the heart of the UNESCO citadel of Blaye, the Gironde Estuary Interpretation Center welcomes you until October 15, 2017.

This museum revolves around two main themes:

  • heading to the world, a story of theEstuary with, for each era, a look at the ships, their destinations, the goods, the ports...
  • Le Blayais, heart of the estuary, the estuary as seen and experienced by local people, the islands, the marshes, hunting and fishing, traditional navigation and shipbuilding, boating, industry.

To extend this visit, the estuary kiosk offers you a presentation of sites, monuments and museums to see on both shores.

For its new season, the Interpretation Center welcomes a new model boat emblematic of the estuary: a skiff made by Jean-Pierre Micheau, one of the last shipwrights of Gironde. A fishing boat, the yole once carried sturgeons, lampreys and shads to the small ports of the estuary. The former remained in service until the middle of the XNUMXth century, the latter are still present in estuary ports, recognizable by their silhouette at water level and their small canvas shelter.
