Embark on an ornithological journey marked by the diversity of habitats crossed and species observed. From moors to brackish lagoons and seashores, you will set off to meet the emblematic Common Cranes and Dark-bellied Brent Geese. You will also discover the exceptional diversity of wintering waders in the Arcachon Basin and scan the sea for seabirds driven by the north wind (divers, grebes, gulls). Accompanied by a naturalist guide from the Regional Natural Park, you will take up your winter quarters at the Maison de la Nature du Bassin d'Arcachon, in the heart of the Teich Ornithological Reserve. You will take advantage of these places to stock up on coastal bird watching before taking the road in a minibus to meet the Common Cranes and wintering birds of the Gascony lands.
Highlights of the weekend:
Day 1 | Welcome and presentation of the weekend at the end of the day by your host.
Day 2 | Observation of wintering coastal birds on the Teich Ornithological Reserve. You will benefit from the comfort and proximity of the reserve's hides to observe waders, ducks and passerines. Departure in the middle of the afternoon towards the interior to witness the spectacle of the return of thousands of Common Cranes to their roosting site.
Day 3 | Early rise! You will go to another site to watch this time the "dormitory rising" which marks the departure of the cranes towards their feeding grounds. A short tour of the nearby fields will be an opportunity to look for some wintering passerines of the moor or even the most terrestrial of our waders (Golden Plovers, Northern Lapwings). You will conclude the stay on the marine shores of the Arcachon basin in search of Dark-bellied Brent Geese, divers and grebes without forgetting the important diversity of gull species (seagulls and gulls).
