Château Lamothe-Despujols dominates the Ciron valley and the Gironde Landes from the heights of La Motte, a medieval fort adjoining the property. Guy Despujols, who took over from his father Jean at the head of this small domain of 8 hectares in one piece, welcomes you in person in this privileged setting, one of the 26 Grands Crus Classés of Sauternes and Barsac. Alongside it, walk the rows of vines.
In the cellar where your visit continues, you learn that Sauternes is born of a curious phenomenon. The morning mists rising above the Ciron combined with the autumnal mildness encourage the development of a fungus, botrytis cinerea, which sublimates the already ripe grapes. Harvesting and sorting the grapes and then vinification require a great deal of skill. It is this delicate alchemy that you taste at the end of your visit to the castle.
