Village of Saint-Ferme

During the High Middle Ages, a small community of black monks built a fortified monastery, refusing to recognize the authority of the count or the bishop. In the Middle Ages, the Benedictines were placed by the Bishop of Bazas under the supervision of the Abbey of Saint Forent de Saumur. They built an abbey in the 12th and 13th centuries to welcome and care for pilgrims going to Compostela.
