On the banks of the Garonne, in 1280, the bastide of Cadillac was founded by Lord Jean de Grailly, with the support of the King of England in order to block the way to the French armies. Of the old layout of the bastide, only the remarkable ramparts (Historical Monuments), two towers, gates (Historical Monuments), the arcaded square and old houses remain. The town is dominated by the imposing mass of the castle of the Dukes of Épernon (National Monument).
